Scott Safety, a division of Tyco International

I was challenged to create a virtual carousel for the new Scott Safety website, to appear on the home page and their product selector page. The main challenge in creating the 3D effect was that it should work on an iPad, and thus be created without Flash.

On the homepage, I also integrated a photo slideshow, a world map with rollovers for each location, and an embedded video. Combining various libraries, API calls and custom code, it all came together in a form that works on desktop browsers and tablets.

Another challenge in working with Scott: their international reach. The pieces I created are designed from the ground up to be translated into multiple languages, with a minimum amount of work necessary to add in each new local version.

Chimera Music Online Store

I was honored to be called upon to work with Sean Lennon and the amazing group of artists he has gathered together to form Chimera Music, a new music label formed in 2009. In addition to a small Web presence at their main site (ChimeraMusic.com) they asked me to put together an online store to sell digital music, physical media, and merchandise for the label and its bands.

Along with developer Scott Reston, we built on the GoodBarry APIs (now Business Catalyst) to create a fully personalized storefront with custom CSS and XHTML templates driving the interface.

Sean and fellow musicians Eden Rice and Charlotte Kemp Muhl created all the artwork for the site, contributing photography and the hand-drawn elements, as well as design direction. With their visuals, I was able to build Flash- and Javascript-based animations and other multimedia elements to showcase the creative product of Chimera.

The site continues to evolve, and I look forward to being a part of the upcoming stages of its development.

Home Shopping Network Brands Overview

Flywheel Design asked me to implement their designs for a custom flash interface for the Home Shopping Network's investor relations site, reminiscent of the Cooliris browser plugin. Displaying multiple brands and catalog images in a 3D "wall" of icons required learning and working with the PaperVision 3D Flash library. Images and copy need to be updated regularly, so the content is built separate from the Flash interface, in a standalone XML file for easy editing by the client.

UNC OneMBA Web Site

The international MBA program at UNC Chapel-Hill is part of a larger global program, OneMBA, that consists of programs at five different schools in different countries around the world. This site serves as the main vehicle for information about that program, its constituent schools, and the application and selection process.

The first part of this challenging project was the multimedia feature for the homepage. This is presented as an interactive timeline and displays text, audio, and video content, all within a custom interface. As the program evolves and curriculum changes, the content of the timeline also needs to change. To make this process easier for the client, all the media, imagery and content is external to the Flash, and built from simple XML files.

The rest of the site needed to be just as engaging, and at the same time just as easy to update. For this purpose, I built the site on top of WordPress, a blog engine that I have worked to repurpose as a content management system (CMS). A hand-built XHTML/CSS theme with some custom PHP functions forms the shell that the content lives within.

FGI Research Web Site

The website for a research consulting company that works with online and social media campaigns has to work as a showcase of their offerings, as well as an accessible brochure to explain just what those offerings are to potential clients.

To that end, the site for FGI Research incorporates a full range of Web technologies, and my own development skills. Two blogs, a WordPress-based CMS, dynamically built pages using jquery, and XML-fed Flash animations populate the site which is extensively optimized for search engine indexing, accessibility, and social media bookmarking and content sharing.

I've continued to work with FGI to implement and update the interfaces for their product offerings - public-facing community sites and private gateways that give their clients access to survey data. See InStyle Trendsetters Community Site elsewhere on this page.

InStyle Trendsetters Community Site

One of the products offered by FGI Research, this site is an example of a custom-built members-only community forum. What you're looking at is the public-facing information site, which establishes the branding and design for the forums and exclusive offers that members see upon signing in. I worked extensively with FGI's developers, creating XHTML and CSS front-side templates that are populated with content and data provided by their own server-based back-end applications. The collaboration has resulted in a fairly seamless integration of their applications with an accessible, extensible web interface.

TransEnterix SPIDER Sites

This family of sites includes the corporate home, a consumer/patient-oriented information site and the site above, aimed at the surgeons who will be using the client's devices.

Tying all three together is a WordPress news site that provides news and press items for each of the sites from a single interface. Each site presented its own challenges, not the least of which was presenting images, slideshows and testimonial video within a single interface.

Duke Raleigh Cares website

Duke Raleigh Hospital participates and sponsors numerous community events and organizations throughout the year. Reporting these activities and the impact they've had on the community had been done in print, we helped them transition this from an expensive one-time annual report to a digital medium that can be updated more regularly and cost effecitvely.

Features of this site include an interactive timeline built in jQuery and numerous Lightbox slideshows to share photos and videos of events.
